Our Prayer for You on Labor Day

We thank you, Lord, for the gift and opportunity of work; may our efforts always be pure of heart, for the good of others and the glory of your name. We lift up to you all who long for just employment and those who work to defend the rights and needs of workers everywhere.

May our working and our resting all give praise to you until the day we share together in eternal rest with all our departed in your Kingdom as you live and reign Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

From Padre…

“As a person [each one] works, [and] performs various actions belonging to the work process; independently of their objective content, these actions must all serve to realize [one’s] humanity, to fulfil the calling to be a person that is [ours] by reason of [our] very humanity. “ On Human Work, no.6, Pope John Paul II

As we celebrate this Labor Day, during the times of relaxation and barbeques (also gifts from God), let us recall that work is God’s gift to humanity. Yes, we often think it would be nice to be the sole winner of the Powerball and retire with no “cares in the world.” And yes, sometimes work can become burdensome and a task.

And yet, human labor (work) is a God-given gift that contributes to society and accentuates in many ways what it is to be a human person. Human labor (work) extends and offers the opportunity to be creative and productive-components that are part of being fully human.

So let us offer gratitude and thanksgiving to God for our work, as well as remember those who are unemployed; who feel that work is merely a burdensome task; and those who confront unfair and unjust practices at their workplace.

Peace and blessings to all this weekend. -Fr. Russell
