How am I using these gifts of God..?
We all like definition. We like to know and understand things. This leads us sometimes to define people with a few short words and call it done. We tend to pigeonhole one another — and ourselves, too.
But if we do this, if we think of our mechanic only as a car guy, if we refer to the people in the house at the corner as ‘the doctors’ and never really get to know them, if we say to ourselves, “I’ve never been good at that,” then this could be an indication that we are not in conversation with God about what His will is for our lives.
If we have already decided what we are and are not meant to do, we are not likely to pray over it, or to spend time to discern it. We must be open to the spirit of the Lord wherever it leads us, regardless of what we or others have come to expect from us.
We have all heard the phrase “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” We also know that God gives us all gifts and these gifts are different in each person. So, what is the balance? How do we truly listen for God’s call in our lives? Are not our skills and talents, our likes and dislikes, an indication of what we are supposed to be doing?
Well, here are some more pointed questions:
- How am I using the gifts, talents and resources God has given me to advance the Gospel?
- How am I using these gifts of God to serve the needs of my parish, and therefore, the greater mission of the Church?
Pray to be open – Pray to offer up – Pray to serve!
